We might all be a little “Zoomed” out by now but nothing is more painful than sitting on a board call with no feedback, interaction, or excitement. How do you break through the glazed-over faces and create a board call that is productive and interactive? These calls are incredibly important when it comes to the future and direction of the organization which is why we have a few ways you can bring back the energy!
1. Break the ice
If you are having trouble getting board members to jump in with their thoughts and ideas, start the call or meeting with an ice breaker. Have everyone answer the question to get them warmed up and talking. This question can be fun and silly, like “what was your first concert?” Or, your icebreaker question could be related to something the board has been considering but has yet to make a decision on.
2. Call on attendees
If you have noticed the same few board members speaking out, call on someone new. Ask what his or her opinion is on the topic at hand. This will open up the lines of communication and provide a new perspective the board might not otherwise have heard.
3. Ask for help from membership
If your board is not producing enough topics or ideas for the meetings and the organization feels stagnant, reach out to your entire membership! Ask what topics they would like to have addressed and make sure to provide follow up from board meetings. This will keep members engaged and ensure the association is moving in the direction your members want to see.
4. Refresh board members on their responsibilities
When new board members join, it is important to provide them with a board orientation. This introduces them to all of the tasks and concepts they will be responsible for throughout their terms. In addition to this, it is suggested to include returning board members in this orientation. It gives them a chance to refresh on some of the responsibilities they committed to.
Sometimes it can feel like an uphill battle when it comes to engagement from your board and membership, but there are a handful of solutions to bring back the enthusiasm.
