By, Darion Lespier-Greaves, Association Manager at Impact AMC
At Impact Association Management, we are always looking for ways to strengthen the organizations we serve through continued learning and innovation. As part of this commitment, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Northeast Institute for Organization Management (IOM) at Villanova University from July 28 to August 1. This program, hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, is a premier nonprofit management and leadership development course that has profoundly impacted my approach to association management.
During the week, I participated in a series of courses designed to challenge and expand my skills. Each session offered insights that are directly applicable to the work we do at Impact AMC, and I am eager to share these valuable lessons with my team and clients. Here are some key takeaways:
Culture of Innovation
This course highlighted the importance of nurturing creativity within an organization. By encouraging an innovative mindset, we can develop fresh ideas and solutions that drive growth and member engagement.
Key takeaway: The importance of regularly assessing programs and services, and not being afraid to sunset those that no longer offer value, especially if they are draining resources. One quick and effective evaluation method is surveying members using the Net Promoter Score (NPS).
Everyday Ethics
Ethics are foundational to effective leadership. This class provided practical tools for making sound ethical decisions in complex situations—ensuring that our actions consistently align with the core values of the associations we manage.
Key takeaway: An insight learned was the necessity of implementing a code of conduct that applies to all members, staff, board members, and vendors.
Revving Your Revenue Stream
"Revving Your Revenue Stream" underscored the necessity of diversifying income sources for long-term stability. By exploring new revenue models, we can enhance the financial resilience of our clients and align these strategies with their mission.
Key takeaway: Something notable was the value of hiring a grant writer who works on commission—a decision the instructor emphasized is well worth it.
Strong Associations for the Future
Adapting to industry trends while staying true to an association’s core mission is crucial. This session emphasized resilience and provided forward-thinking strategies to ensure that associations remain strong, even in times of change.
Key takeaway: An important lesson was finding ways to engage the broader marketplace beyond just members, recognizing that some may prefer to be sponsors or participate as non-members—and that this can strengthen the organization.
Art of Persuasion and Negotiation
Whether in securing new members or negotiating partnerships, this session offered valuable techniques to achieve win-win outcomes—skills that are vital to our client relationships and expanding their reach.
Key takeaway: Always ask, “How can we let them win while we also win?”
Volunteer Development
Volunteers play an essential role in many associations, and creating a robust volunteer strategy is key to their success. This course gave me actionable steps for enhancing volunteer engagement and retention, ensuring they remain connected to the organization’s mission.
Key takeaway: Celebrate both big and small wins with members, making sure the process remains enjoyable.
These sessions, among others, have equipped me with new tools and strategies to continue driving success for the associations we serve at Impact AMC. More than just a professional development opportunity, IOM is a transformative experience that strengthens leadership skills and fosters a network of dedicated professionals committed to advancing the nonprofit sector.
Drive Meaningful Impact
At Impact AMC, we believe that continuous learning is essential for delivering the best possible outcomes to our clients. The knowledge and insights gained from programs like IOM not only empower us to lead more effectively but also enhance the value we bring to our associations, ensuring their long-term success.
If you’re looking to elevate your leadership skills and drive meaningful impact in association management, I highly recommend the Institute for Organization Management. It’s more than a learning experience; it’s a pathway to innovation and sustainable growth.
